The project, Nee Place
Like Yem, is an exploration of the village of Medomsley in County Durham. Although this project is part of my
portfolio development module for my MA photography course at the University of
Central Lancashire, it is, on a more personal level a look at the village I still
consider to be home.
Despite having lived in the village of Medomsley since the
age of six, it was only when I moved to Preston twelve years later for
university that I came to value the beauty and sense of community that I had
grown up surrounded by.
Personal
When I moved away to university in 2009, one of the hardest
things for me to deal with was, with the exception of living away from my
family for the first time, living in a city. While Medomsley is not the most
rural of villages I found the lack of trees, peacefulness, friendliness and
sense of community in Preston very hard to deal with.
It was in Medomsley that I learnt to ride a bike and fell
off for the first time cutting my knee open the day before my first synchronised
swimming competition. It was in Medomsley that I got my first job working as a
waitress in the Miners Arms pub and, despite still being based in Preston for
my MA it is Medomsley I think of as home.
