Medomsley's war memorial stands at the junction of Fines Road and Front Street to the left of the church gates. It remembers those who lost their lives in the First World War and Second World War.
Unveiled in 1921, the Celtic cross stands at a height of 17 feet in a small area surrounded by flower beds.
The names of those who died in the First World War are carved in two columns on the front face and right face of the memorial. The inscription reads: "To the glory of God and in reverent and grateful memory of the gallant dead 1914-1918.
Their reward is with the Lord and the care of them with the Most High"
The names of those who died in the Second World War are carved on the front face below those who fell during the First World War.
On the left and rear faces, the names from Hamsterley Colliery are inscribed.
Hallo, Francesca. A nice little blog, so thanks from everyone with a connection to Medomsley. Hopefully others will be inspired to do likewise and put up their own blogs for the Derwent Valley communities to which they belong or have a connection. Every day, collections of family photographs containing unique Derwentside history are thrown into dustbins by people who've inherited them and don't know the value of them or what to do with them when their owners pass on. In some parts of the country there are projects now running to save this local history before it is too late. Derwentside is in danger of losing its family level history but it would actually be very easy to save it with locally organised oral history projects and village hall projects equipped with scanners and a volunteer operator to collect local images and memories and feed them into larger projects with archival infrastructure.
ReplyDeleteIf you're a retired Derwentside resident who thinks this is a good idea, what are you waiting for...!
Best wishes

Hi Victoria,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for taking the time to look around my blog and to comment, it is always good to hear what people think about my work.
This blog was set up for a university assignment on my MA Photography course (I have 3 or 4 decades ahead of me before I retire though!)
More of my photography can be seen at www.francescadentphotography.co.uk
