Now and Then

Despite all of the change over the years, Medomsley doesn't look all that different. This section will look at a range of photographs from years gone by as well as my own photographs taken in November 2012.

In this view of Manor Road, it doesn't look like much has changed. The most obvious difference is that the horse and cart in the top photograph has been replaced by cars lining the street, the shop you see on the right hand side of the old photograph was the village post office when I first moved to the village but is now a beauty treatment centre.

Today Medomsley has two pubs, The Miners Arms, which has changed a lot since the original photograph with the addition of the conservatory and outdoor seating area, and The Royal Oak. There was a third pub, also pictured called The Stags Head but there are now houses on its site.

Today called Fines Road, there are once again only a small number of obvious changes between the times visible in these two photographs. The bungalows in the older photograph are no longer there today.

This house once belonged to the village blacksmith with the workshop taking over the ground floor and the family living in the flat upstairs for a number of years until a new workshop (now the garage) was built and the ground floor of the house was changed into a living area.

When I first moved to the village, Fiona's General Dealers was the place to go for freshly baked cakes and bread. After the closure of the village Post Office, Fiona's became the new home of Medomsley's Post Office but, despite a petition to save the village Post Office, it closed a few years ago. The shop is now being converted into a house.
